Lurking in your beauty products from deodorants to toothpaste, cosmetics and more, are dangerous chemicals that could be harming your health.

Luckily, knowledge is power and we have a list of the 5 most toxic chemicals commonly found in beauty products:

So, what are some good alternatives and how do you start making a change to the products you use?

1.) Deodorant: We already wrote an article about how bad most deodorants are. You can read that here. Making this change will be a significant improvement to your health. Look for deodorants that use natural ingredients and definitely avoid ones that contain aluminium.

2.) Toothpaste/Hand Soap: Some products that are “anti-bacterial” also contain Triclosan. You can read more about this horrible chemical in one of our previous articles here. Some good natural anti-bacterial alternatives include tea tree, peppermint, lavender or oregano essential oils. Many major manufacturers of toothpaste also make triclosan free options.

3.) Shampoo/Conditioner: It can be overwhelming to read the ingredient label on your shampoos and conditioners. But, we found a good article here that can demystify things a bit. Natural hair care is always best, but even making a simple change, such as avoiding the chemicals above and choosing a sulfate free option can make a world of difference.

4.) Cosmetics: There are so many ambiguous chemicals in cosmetics, including lead, mercury and aluminium. Most of the chemicals used in cosmetics have also been linked to hormone disruptions and even cancers. Definitely choose more natural or organic cosmetics when possible, or try ditching the makeup altogether and just wearing your natural skin.

5.) Face/Body Moisturizers: When applying something that will absorb into your skin (the largest organ of the body), it is even more important that you check your ingredient label. Most body lotions, sunscreens and face creams use highly toxic chemicals and fragrances that have been linked to dermatitis, hormone disruptions and some cancers. Great alternatives to choose include body lotions and face creams that use all natural ingredients. Basically, if you wouldn’t eat it don’t put it on your skin!

Remember, 26 seconds is all it takes for the chemicals in your beauty products to enter your blood stream and with the average women putting 168 toxic chemicals on her skin each day, it is worth paying attention to.

Why not try switching to more organic, natural beauty care products to see if it makes a difference in your life.
