There has been so much news surrounding Ebola that its hard to make out what is fact and what is fiction. While this article does not promise to have all the answers, it does offer what we hope will be an accurate understanding of the disease without all the hype.
What is Ebola?
Even though we are just hearing about Ebola in the mainstream media now, the disease has been around for a very long time especially in parts of Africa.
Ebola or Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever is a virus that causes a variety of symptoms including fever, sore throat, muscle pain, headaches and in some cases, death.
It is most prevalent in West Africa and to date around 4,000 have lost their lives to the disease. Death is rare from Ebola and usually only occurs in patients with compromised immune systems or those who have not had access to proper treatment.
Currently, only around 1 percent of African countries are battling with Ebola ranking it under malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and many other infections.
How is it Spread?
Contrary to popular belief, Ebola is not that easy to catch and is not airborne. The primary risk of catching Ebola is coming in to contact with bodily fluids such as saliva, semen, vomit, blood and sweat. The virus then has to enter the hosts mucus membranes either through the nose, mouth or a cut etc.
This means its almost impossible to catch the virus through casual social contact with an infected person. Furthermore, victims are only contagious once they begin displaying symptoms.
To put it in perspective, Sars is three time more contagious, Mumps are eight times more contagious and Measles are around fifteen times more contagious than Ebola.
Ebola is a public health disaster?
Looking at the facts its easy to see that the representation of Ebola here in the US and other Western countries has been laced with fear mongering tactics and falsehoods.
While Ebola exists and is a serious disease, the risk of catching Ebola in the US is virtually zero in comparison to all the hype surrounding it.
Even in Africa, Ebola is not as threatening or as damaging as other diseases such as malaria or HIV. Currently, statistics are showing the fatality rate at around 48%, but this is largely due to poor hygiene and lack of treatment facilities.
The accuracy of the fatality rate is also debatable with some sources claiming the rate as high as 90%. The WHO website also states that “case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90%.”
While this is true, if you look a little closer at the statistics (also found on the WHO website), when the fatality rate was high, the cases were extremely low. For example, in 2011 in Uganda ONE case of Ebola was reported which resulted in death, this means that the case fatality rate was 100% for the year 2011. This of course skews the averages and is very easy to manipulate or misrepresent.
Why all the Hype?
Governments stand to gain a lot from fear mongering campaigns such as these. In fact, “psychological warfare operations” such as the Ebola pandemic create fear and unrest in the minds of citizens which in turn, makes them easier to control. (What better way to control people than by making them fearful….)
Once the hysteria has set in thanks to the media, the government steps in to “protect” by imposing more laws and more strategies that will help them have more power than the people.
Think back to the Anthrax scare in 2001, the Bird Flu scare in 2005, the Swine Flu in 2009- all of these so called pandemics are soon and very quickly forgotten but serve a greater purpose for governments- submission and control.
On top of that, the pharmaceutical companies stand to gain by releasing vaccines and treatments to help “protect” the people from the dangers of these so-called, apocalyptic diseases.
Is there a Cure?
To date there has been no proven cure for Ebola, however preliminary studies have found that colloidal silver may be beneficial in preventing the disease.
A study conducted by the US Department of Defense (DOD) in conjunction with other federal agencies discovered that silver nano-particles were highly effective against Ebola.
The study titled “Silver Nano-particles Neutralize Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses,” stated, that silver had “powerful neutralizing effects” against the virus.
They found that colloidal silver was able to stop the virus from replicating as it decreased “S segment gene expression” and decreased “virus production”.
Despite these findings, this study has received little attention and all research surrounding silver nano-particle efficacy has been stopped.
In fact, shipments of silver which were sent to the struggling communities in Africa were returned and banned by the World Health Organization (WHO) who stated that the treatment was “experimental.”
This is highly ironic however, as both WHO and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated publicly that they are open to experimental therapies for Ebola due to the lack of treatment options available.
Another possible reason that the shipment of colloidal silver was stopped is due to intervention from pharmaceutical companies who would fail to profit from this particular alternative treatment.
It also may be interesting to note that the US has a patent over the “invention” of Ebola which is common when drug companies are looking to control who can create a treatments and conduct research. You can read more at: Patent Application Reveals the CDC Invented Ebola.
What you can do?
Ebola is a serious disease and while more should be done to limit the fatalities, the chances of catching it in the US are slim to none.
When all the fear and psychological warfare is taken away, we are left with the simple truth- Ebola is not airborne meaning its not highly contagious, it effects around 1% of the African population and its effects are not as serious or debilitating as other diseases, it also can be managed with correct treatment, proper hygiene and perhaps even colloidal silver.
Those who are genuinely concerned about infection risk could take precautions by staying hydrated, taking colloidal silver and other immune boosting vitamins (C, E, D) and herbs (Echinacea, Ginger, Oregano).
Don’t get caught up in all the hype! Don’t allow the government or media to manipulate you. Do your own research, make your own opinions…
