How to Deal with a Dead End Job

Quit.

But there are all those other things to think about right? Like bills, that new shirt you want, the years of education, that upcoming trip to Mexico…..

Let’s face it, if you hate your job you should quit and go in pursuit of your dreams! But for many, this just does not appear to be a reality they can face due to fear, societal expectations and life pressures.

While I am a huge advocate of leaving behind all that makes you miserable and going in search of your bliss, I understand that many out there  find it hard to rationalize quitting, so this article is for you.

Some people are inspired by their career choices and want to pursue being happy with that they do, and others don’t really mind what they do as long as they have stability and can pay their bills. Neither situation is bad or good, but being in a job that makes you feel depressed is definitely no way to live.

There is a way around it, and while quitting would be great, its not necessarily the only option.

Have you ever considered transcending the work place?

Now, this is no easy task but it will help you to come to terms with those fears that are holding you back. Think of transcending the workplace as that bridge between being miserable and quitting.

Firstly, in order to transcend the workplace, you must first open your mind to consciousness. We talk about consciousness a lot on this site, but it has all been summarized for you in this article- The Flowering of Consciousness.

Once you have opened your mind to the idea of being conscious, you then must understand the ego, because in many ways, the ego will be your biggest ‘enemy’ and your greatest teacher. Again, we have spoken about the ego a lot on this site so you can read a summary here on How the Ego Manifests Itself.

If you are unhappy in your workplace, chances are the ego will be involved in some way, shape or form. Perhaps its the people around you, your boss or even yourself that is trapped in the clutches of the ego.

Letting go of your ego will automatically cause a shift in those around you and how you view your workplace.

Allowing consciousness to move in to replace the ego, will allow you to feel a sense of peace, no matter what you are doing or how horrible your work environment is.

Instead of fighting against everything that is presented before you, accept it. Ride with it. Approach it consciously.

If you find yourself getting mad, irritated or stressed, stop. Stop everything you are doing, even if its just for a second and bring your awareness to your breath. Take a deep breath. Then continue. Avoid doing anything in a state of distress. (Seriously, this works you should try it!)

Changing your mindset is also extremely powerful and  having a positive outlook about your day and your job will allow you to better get through the day. Whinging and complaining about everything however, simply feeds your ego and serves no one. Going on and on about how you are “wronged”at work is like a immune building tonic for your ego.

Instead, focus on each individual moment, don’t get caught up in the drama and understand that while your boss may seem to be some extra terrestrial alien, really he is just caught under the grips of the ego. Allow all that he says and his energy to inspire you to transcend higher.

Got 1000+ tasks to do? Just focus on what you can do, clear the clutter from your mind and tackle each item with your calm and loving attention.

So, if all of that seems too difficult, it’s because it is. But it’s not impossible.

To make it a little easier, here is a checklist:

  • Understand how the ego manifests itself within you, its sometimes easier to do this in others first. See how the ego has a grip of people in the workplace. Don’t judge, just observe.
  • By observing the ego, you can begin to transcend it within yourself, once you do, there will be a noticeable shift in the environment around you. If you notice someone acting with ego, try not to get engaged in their drama.
  • When faced with numerous tasks, instead of being stressed, allow consciousness in. Focus on your breath and the present moment, this way you can remain focussed on each individual task rather than being overwhelmed with everything.
  • Think positively- try to accept this situation as through acceptance you can find peace. Changing your energy to be more positive will also cause a shift in energy around you and how your co-workers interact with you
  • Stop complaining, if something bothers you, use your new found conscious energy to express yourself and focus on what you can do to change the situation instead.

Finally, the biggest piece of advice I can instil in those stuck in a dead end job (besides quit) is to remember that “this too shall pass”. Know that this job is not forever and be grateful for the experiences acquired in this job as they will surely get you to the place you need to be.

Life is short and was  never meant to be taken seriously but if you are not ready to move on, then learn to love and appreciate what you have.
