Be Careful What You Wish For

be careful what you wish for

Have you ever worked so hard to achieve a goal, reached it and then realized it was not what you really wanted? Or that it didn’t fulfil you the way that you thought it would?

Sometimes we can become so focused on the ‘having’ of our goal or desire, that we lose sight of the bigger picture and why we really wanted it in the first place.

I have experienced this first hand. I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my goal of becoming an actor. I really loved acting and really wanted to make it work but the closer I got to my definition of success, the more stressed out, unfulfilled and anxious I became.

Having multiple auditions a day and getting in front of casting directors was exactly what I wanted, but when I finally reached that place, I felt nothing but overwhelmed.

It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy acting, but the constant auditioning, driving through LA traffic and trying to juggle my regular day job started to wear me out on all levels.

It all sounded so good on paper and during my manifestation rituals, but when it actual came to the reality of it, my goal came with many ‘strings attached’ that I hadn’t anticipated. Eventually for me, these strings made the entire pursuit of my goal simply, not worth it.

Often when we put our minds and hearts to a goal that is focused on the physical attainment of something whether it be a certain career, money or a relationship, we seem to sign up for a whole lot more than we bargained for. (I guess that is why they say, be careful what you wish for…)

“Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it”- Dalai Lama

Sure, you can have a goal of booking a job on a TV show or having your company reach $100,000 in sales, but is that really what you want?

Goals that focus on the physical attainment of something are often created by our ego. While there is nothing wrong with this, often it is not money, or fame or fortune that we are really looking for. Underneath these ego or “physically” driven goals, there is an emotion and chances are what we are really after is the emotion instead.

So for example, lets say your goal is to book an acting job on a TV show. Seems fair enough, but is this really want you want on the deepest level? Probably not. On a deeper sense you are probably looking for more security, more satisfaction and more fulfilment.

Isn’t a goal like that far more powerful and rewarding?

When you make your goals from a place of feeling, rather than a place of ego, suddenly everything you do becomes centered around your goal. Rather than scrambling to turn your goal into a reality at all costs, you begin to instead focus on the bigger picture, such as finding more security, satisfaction and a greater sense of fulfilment in all areas of your life. If this includes doing auditions, great. If not, that is ok too.

Attempting to construct your goals from the root rather than the surface also allows you to feel a greater sense of overall life satisfaction and prevents you from feeling overwhelmed and stressed out by the pursuit of your goals.

As far as law of attraction goes too, you attract what you are, so the more time and energy you spend on servicing your sense of security, satisfaction and fulfilment the more the Universe will respond in kind.

At the end of the day, no matter how passionate you are about your physical goals, you are never going to fulfil all that you are looking for in life by obtaining them. Your life is so much bigger than that. Your life is so much bigger than the goals you have for yourself, no matter how grand they may seem to you.

Instead, try living for the now, try living using emotionally driven goals for yourself and bring them into the awareness of your entire life, not just one aspect of it.

Why not take a moment now to think about a goal for yourself and write it from a place of feeling and emotion?

Here’s mine: My goal is to be fulfilled, inspired and joyful.
