According to the study that was published in Life Sciences, using just the herb alone resulted in a 28 percent reduction in breast cancer cells but when paired with iron, wormwood was able to eradicate 98 percent of the cancer.
Using wormwood also posed no threat to healthy cells, had no side effects and worked rapidly, killing cancer cells in just 16 hours.
Wormwood has often been used as a powerful anti-malarial herb but this latest study has shown that it can also be an effective and safe cancer treatment.
Wormwood extract is now being mass produced by biotechnology industries who are hoping to use the herb in drug treatments. In fact, the French drug maker Sanofi is expected to make 50 to 60 tons of wormwood per year to ensure they have enough to meet global demands.
Bioengineers, Henry Lai and Narendra Singh from the University of Washington were the first to make this discovery however, Chinese medicine practitioners have been using the herb for years.
