Raw Honey Treats Dandruff and Dermatitis

HoneyRaw honey has been used for centuries for its antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties and now the latest research has shown that it is excellent for treating scalp conditions.

Honey has also been known to soothe sore throats, help reduce coughing, and is great for ulcers, is anti-inflammatory and can facilitate wound healing. In fact, honey was used in over 500 traditional Ancient remedies as depicted in Stone Age paintings and from Ancient Egyptian artefacts.

The latest research into the benefits of honey has now shown that raw or crude honey is an excellent cure for dandruff, hair loss and itchy, scaly scalps.

Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff,  is an embarrassing condition that effects almost everyone at some point in their lives and a new study titled, Therapeutic and Prophylactic effects of Crude Honey on Chronic Seborrheic Dermatitis” has found that raw, unprocessed honey can be of benefit.

Raw honey was diluted into a solution of 90 percent honey and 10 percent warm water, and was massaged into the scalp of 30 volunteers aged 15 to 60 years. All the volunteers suffered from scaling, itching, hair loss, or dermatitis of the face and chest.

The honey solution was kept on the scalp for three hours and then rinsed off in warm water. The volunteers had to do this every other day for a four week period.

At the end of the four weeks, researchers found that all of the patients had reported less itching, less hair loss and the disappearance of skin lesions, scaling and flaking scalps.

Half of the volunteers were then asked to continue the honey treatment once per week for the next six months and the other half were instructed to stop the treatment.

None of the patients that kept up the once weekly honey routine had a relapse and their scalps continued to remain flake free. Those that stopped the treatments however experienced a relapse within 2-4 months.

“It might be concluded that crude honey could markedly improve seborrheic dermatitis and associated hair loss and prevent relapse when applied weekly,” stated the research report.

While it is not known exactly why honey is so effective for treating the scalp, one theory is that dandruff is actually a fungal infection and because raw honey is anti-fungal it helps to kill of the fungus and reduce inflammation.

While using an anti-dandruff shampoo may appear like an easier solution for scalp conditions, often these shampoos are laced with harmful, carcinogenic chemicals and usually, after some time they stop being effective.

Honey, on the other hand has no side effects and is a completely safe and natural solution.
