The Magic of Synchronicity

synchroncity

Is it synchronicity or just a coincidence?

Synchronicity was first defined by Carl Jung in the 1920’s as, “the meaningful coincidence of outer and inner events that are not themselves connected.”

Whether you believe that synchronicity is magic or just coincidence, we have all had experiences that seem too strange to explain. Like when we are thinking of someone and suddenly we bump into them or get a call from them. Or when we randomly meet someone we have an unexpected connection to and we find ourself saying, “gee, it’s a small world”. Or when a certain event in time leads us to meeting someone or avoiding a car accident.

Many say that life’s little synchronicities are a sign that we are on the ‘right’ path and that they are the way in which the Universe communicates with you and reassures you.

Jung also believed that synchronicities were more likely to happen when you were going through a rough patch in life to give you hope and guidance.

The gift of synchronicity can’t fully be appreciated until we experience it for ourselves and even for Jung it took over 20 years to understand their exact significance.

“Synchronicity is no more baffling or mysterious than the discontinuities of physics. It is only the ingrained belief in the sovereign power of causality that creates intellectual difficulties and makes it appear unthinkable that causeless events exist or could ever exist. But if they do, then we must regard them as creative acts, as the continuous creation of a pattern that exists from all eternity, repeats itself sporadically, and is not derivable from any known antecedents.”– Jung

During times of stress and life crisis these little synchronicities can be our shining beacons of light, it’s just up to us to look for the clues and messages that the Universe is presenting to us and often they are simpler and more direct than we imagine…

“One afternoon while walking to catch a bus I thought I forgot my wallet. I stopped, searched my bag and found that it was right there as it should be. I began walking again but all of a sudden a car came speeding around the intersection and crashed into another car before speeding off again. This momentary pause on my walk stopped me from crossing that very same intersection probably very close to the moment that the car came speeding through. While debris was flying around me and a family with children started emerging from the hit car I was in complete shock and disbelief. Thankfully everyone was ok and neighbors started emerging from their houses to help.

After some time, though still in shock, I was able to cross the intersection and make my way to the bus stop. Standing there was a young man with his groceries. He was asking me if I was ok as he also had witnessed the accident. He then opened up his groceries and offered me a slice of bread saying that it would calm my nerves. I hesitantly accepted the bread.

When the bus rolled up the young man told the bus driver what had happened and made sure to tell him to stop at my destination. The young man then hopped off the bus and continued on his way.

I was confused, I had assumed that he would have been catching the bus too. I held the bread in my hand, not comfortable enough to eat it and still shaken.

Some time had passed and I was beginning to feel more and more anxious, I was really thrown by what had happened and asked the Universe for a sign, just a little sign to show that everything was ok. I asked for a butterfly or a falling leaf, and yet nothing came.

It wasn’t until I retold my story to a friend did she alert me to the fact that the signs were right in front of me- the stop to search for my wallet, the young man with the bread. All this time I had been searching for a ‘sign’ and yet it was right in front of me, I was just too blind at the time to see it.

Synchronicities happen all the time, it’s up to us how much we want to read into them however sometimes, these magical moments remind us that we are not alone.
