One of the biggest gifts that we have been given as human beings is the gift of imagination. I don’t know if baby hippos have a creative side, but as far as I know, humans are the only species that can see a couch and think “Yeah, I can make a fort out of that.”
I think we should practice our imagination more. It was easy when we were kids but as adults we seem to have lost the spirit.
Think about it, when was the last time you really expanded your mind to have fun? If you can recall the last time, then kudos to you. Me, I feel like I have to take a moment and really reflect on the last time I didn’t try to use logic instead of letting my brain be inspired creatively.
The last time I truly let my brain run wild was when I was performing in an improv show at iO West in Hollywood. It sounds strange out of context, but I was playing a weight lifting machine in Venice Beach that had just been installed and I was tired of everybody farting on me.
You don’t have to read that last sentence twice to realize how ridiculous it is. But, it worked and the audience enjoyed the scene and I enjoyed playing without judging my thoughts.
While using your imagination can be a great stress release, it can also be a powerful tool. Orville and Wilbur Wright patented the idea of the “flying machine” after using their ingenuity and having confidence in their idea that man can fly a piloted aircraft. Well, thanks to the Wright Brothers we can now fly whenever and wherever we want. AND WE GET FREE PEANUTS ON THE WAY!
Walt Disney wanted to create an entire land based off of his imagination. 17 million dollars dollars and few years later, Walt created the happiest place on earth, Disneyland.
I feel like I don’t have to give another example for you to realize that once you use your mental creative side, fantastic and magical ideas come to fruition. I mean, we put a man on the moon because of someone having the thought to do so! Okay, that was the last example, I promise.
So lets all march to our couches and build ourselves a fort! Your brain will thank you for it. Who knows, maybe this time next year, humanity will be thanking you for your imagination.
