The first Mercury Retrograde of 2021 begins on January 30 and ends on February 20.
Mercury will retrograde in the sign of Aquarius, which is a new energy for us.
For the last few years, Mercury has predominantly been retrograde in water signs, but all through 2021 it seems that we have a new theme of Mercury predominantly retrograde in air signs.
Mercury is ruled by the element of air and earth, so having it retrograde in one of its ruling elements may intensify the experience.
We may feel mentally foggy, confused, or lack the clarity that is needed to make decisions.
Whenever Mercury enters retrograde, especially in an air sign, we have to work a little harder to tame our monkey-mind, and be sure we are not spiraling into a loop of overthinking, or getting trapped in limiting beliefs.
While Mercury retrograde in air signs can cloud our mental energy, it doesn’t bring thoughts up for no reason.
If you do find yourself ruminating on something, it may be a sign that you need to pay attention. This is a bit of a fine line.
On the one hand, you don’t want to ignore any nagging thoughts and feelings, but on the other, you also don’t want to get stuck ruminating and going over things again and again.
“The thinking mind is a useful and powerful tool, but it is also very limiting when it takes over your life completely when you don’t realize it is only a small aspect of the consciousness you are.”– Eckhart Tolle
Our task during this Mercury Retrograde season, and the ones to come, will be to acknowledge any mental chatter, observe what needs to be looked at, and learn how to release and let go of the rest.
This is definitely no easy challenge, but each of us have the power to find our own balance point between the idea of finding stillness and peace of mind, but not ignoring our thoughts either.
We can also think of these air-sign Mercury Retrogrades as an opportunity to sharpen our intuition and learn how to distill what is fear and insecurity, and what is our intuition.
As Mercury moves Retrograde through Aquarius from the end of January to the middle of February, we may notice our relationships highlighted.
Mercury Retrograde has a way of triggering old relationships and bringing unresolved issues back up to the surface. It can also open the door to rekindle past romances.
If you are feeling uncertain or unsure about a relationship, this Mercury Retrograde may cloud the waters. Sometimes you have to let the dust settle before you can see clearly.
Cosmic support and some clarity will come as Mercury aligns with the Sun on February 8. This is known as the inferior conjunction and is an important part of the Mercury Retrograde cycle.
While we may have to wait till Mercury goes direct for full clarity, this is a power point and may reveal to us some new insights or information that can help us on our journey.
Remember, Mercury is the messenger of the Gods, and when it enters retrograde, or the underworld as the ancients would say, it is a time for us to unearth thoughts and feelings that are buried in our subconscious.
This can be incredibly powerful and can help us to understand the root of any beliefs or behavior patterns we are playing out. It can also allow us to understand ourselves on a deeper level.
When we understand ourselves, it also allows us to create healthier relationships with others.
The reason for the strong focus on love and relationships under this Mercury Retrograde is due to the position of Venus. Venus will be very active at this time, as will the planet Uranus.
Uranus is the planet of surprise and whenever its energy is present, things can catch us off guard.
Some new information may be revealed, requiring a certain level of change or instability. This may feel unsettling at first, but it can also guide us to awaken into a deeper understanding of who we are choosing to surround ourselves with and the type of partnerships that we are gravitating towards.
Life is tough, which is why we humans gravitate towards family, community, and partnership with others. We can achieve so much on our own, but we can achieve so much more when we team up with others and receive support from them too.
This first Mercury Retrograde of 2021 will shine a spotlight on our closest relationships. It may trigger things from our past, reignite heart wounds that we need to clear, and cloud the waters. But, it also offers a deeper understanding, new clarity, and awakening into how we can create positive change.
As a side note, pay attention to the themes that come up during this Mercury Retrograde around love and matters of the heart. Journal and write them down, for they will come in handy as we experience Venus Retrograde come December 2021.
The first Mercury Retrograde of the year is our opportunity to get intimate with our mind and how it is functioning. Is our mind controlling us or are we able to sort through the intelligence that it offers and leave the rest?
Your state of mind can rule your entire life, and Mercury Retrograde is here to guide us.
