The 5 of Cups and The 2 of Wands

On first glance, receiving the 5 of Cups, also called Disappointment, may not seem like a good thing.

Depicted on the card are empty cups, representing our feelings of depletion. There is a horse with his head hanging low. And the whole scene is in black and white. There is real pain associated with this card.

Disappointment can come in many forms. Disappointment with ourselves, others or the world itself. Maybe we had high expectations and things did not turn out the way we thought. Maybe we feel overwhelmed by all the suffering in the world.

The 5 of Cups is asking you to feel your feelings. It is telling you it is okay to feel disappointed as it is part of the human experience. Let yourself cry. Write down your thoughts. Grieve.

But when you let your feelings out, leave some room for contemplation. Contemplate your expectations of others, the world, and even yourself.

Do you expect perfection? Do you have specific exceptions that you don’t articulate? Do you feel let down because your expectations are too high?

Unarticulated expectations can lead to a lot of disappointment. We need to be aware if we have specific outcomes we are holding on to and either let them go or share what they are.

If we let them go, we can have moments unfold freely and often be pleasantly surprised by how things turn out. If we share our expectations, then others can know what we are looking for and we can work together to create a desired outcome.

Holding on to your desires without communicating what they are is a surefire way to be disappointed. When we share what we are thinking, we still might not get exactly what we want, but at least we are not expecting others to be mind readers.

Being able to balance having expectations while also allowing life to flow freely, will be an important part of your journey. Disappointment will continue to knock you down if you don’t learn to question your desires or perhaps your perfectionism.

The 2 of Wands is back again this week, but in a different deck, so we know the message really wants to be heard.

The 2 of Wands asks: What is your domain? What is the place that makes you feel the most energized? Where are you the king, the goddess, the ruler of all?

The 2 of Wands wants you to tap into the places that give you power. It wants you to tap in to where you feel the strongest and most confident so you can bring this energy into other areas of your life.

Maybe you feel strongest when you are cooking a gorgeous meal, at the gym with music blasting or on the phone with the true friend. Think about things that don’t feel like work. Things that give you nourishment without depleting you in any way.

The idea is, if you know you can be a badass in some places in your life, why can’t you be a badass in all areas? You are so funny, creative and fearless at times but need to grow this energy into the places where you are less confident.

Maybe you are about to start your own company, put yourself out there in the dating world, or allow your talents to shine in front of a crowd.

Wherever you feel you need more power and direction, call upon the fiery energy that is already inside you. You have everything you need to expand your world.

Using the energy of the 2 of Wands to build you up when you experience the depleting energy of 5 of Cups will be really helpful. We all get knocked down by disappointment but we are becoming more and more resilient.

Mantra for the week: I let go of perfection and the need for specific outcomes. I let in powerful, resilient, and free-flowing energy.
