On the September Equinox, when the hours of light and dark are the same, we experience a shift in energy.
In the Northern Hemisphere, energy begins to move inwards as we prepare for the colder months. The leaves begin falling from the trees as Mother Earth slows down, and we too are encouraged to do the same.
In the Southern Hemisphere, energy begins moving outwards as we prepare for the warmer summer months. Flowers begin to bloom and all of nature becomes fertile again. Just the same, we too are encouraged to create, to blossom, and to put ourselves out there.
This shift in energy is also marked by the Sun moving into the air sign of Libra. Libra is all about learning to find balance and learning how to respect your own needs as well as the needs of others.
When the Sun moves into Libra there is an emphasis on partnership, community, and how we can work together with our fellow humans rather than against them.
In order to celebrate this shift of energy, here is a simple ritual idea. This ritual can be done no matter where you live and can be adapted however you see fit.
September Equinox Ritual
This ritual is best done on September 22-23rd however, it can be done on the days surrounding too.
You will need:
- A fresh flower (for those in the Southern Hemisphere)
- A dried leaf (for those in the Northern Hemisphere)
- Bowl of Water
- Pen and paper
1.) Lay out all your ingredients in front of you and take 10 deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth in order to center yourself.
2.) Light your candle, place your hand over your heart, and repeat the following affirmation aloud-
“I am balanced. I am whole. I am grounded. I am centered. I am earth, I am water. I am fire, I am air. I am the Sun, I am the Moon. I am connected to all that is within and all that is around. I am rooted in myself. I am peace. I am love. I am light. I am harmony.”
3.) Take another 5 deep breaths with your hand still over your heart. Now, take your piece of paper and split it into two. On one piece of paper, write down one thing you would like to let go of in your life and on the other piece of paper, write one thing you would like to bring into your life.
4.) Fold both the papers and hold the paper with the thing you want to release in your hand. Close your fist and state out loud what you would like to release. Place the paper into the fire of the candle. Once the paper begins burning, drop it in the bowl of water.
5.) Now, take the paper of the thing that you want to bring into your life. Place it on top or next to the flower or leaf. Hold the two items together and repeat the following- “With this new season I bring……..into my life. I know what I desire is coming to me.”
6.) Place the leaf/ flower and the paper into the same bowl of water. Clasp the bowl of water with your two hands and repeat “Thank You” five times.
7.) Discard the bowl of water in the garden. Know that your messages have been sent up to the nature spirits and to the Universe.
